the functional soup
watercolour on paper
the functional soup is a is a place where parts interweave to form a whole – pixels making up a picture, cells, organs and members making up a body. if you zoom out complex structures like big corporations or the internet of things come across as a blurry slush where seemingly individual agents operate more like body parts then like the distinct semi-permanent employees or objects they might look like through our relatively narrow every day perspective. the term was used by philosopher nick bostrom in his 2014 book titled superintelligence, where he examines the possibilities and risks concerning the development of artificial intelligence.the series consists of five watercolours made at the vatican museum in rome during a residency at the danish institute in 2015.
